A Straight-Ahead Soprano That Means Business
Soprano saxophone has a reputation for being finicky — tricky to tune, tough to control, and hard to find in a form that doesn't require a second mortgage. The Yamaha YSS-475II quietly solves most of those problems. It's built around the same "top-down" design philosophy Yamaha uses for its professional Custom EX lineup, meaning a lot of what makes those horns special has filtered down into an instrument priced for intermediate players.
The one-piece yellow brass body with integrated straight neck keeps the instrument light and well-balanced, which matters more than it sounds when you're working on tone control for an extended practice session. The gold baked epoxy lacquer finish gives it a warm, professional look that holds up in the classroom or on stage.
Whether you're a middle or high school player ready to step beyond your starter horn, or an adult musician looking for a soprano you can actually grow with, the YSS-475II is built to match where you're headed.
Design Rooted in Yamaha's Professional Line
The Bb spatula key on the YSS-475II is derived directly from the design of the YSS-875EXHG Custom professional soprano. That's not just a marketing footnote — it means your left-hand pinkie technique is being developed on a key layout modeled after Yamaha's top-of-the-line instrument. The left-hand seesaw key is similarly designed to increase playability and provide a more comfortable feel during extended sessions.
For the second-generation YSS-475, the body bore was redesigned for improved intonation and optimized air flow, while the vent tubing was redesigned to minimize noise from lower vent key action. The new key post rib plate design adds increased strength and durability, and the bullet-point headless pivot screws make field adjustments straightforward.
Keywork That Gets Out of Your Way
The YSS-475II features a tear-drop shaped front F key that improves access during faster passages, and regular key posts that reduce resistance to help the instrument respond easily. The adjustable plastic thumb hook lets you dial in a hand position that's comfortable for your specific grip, rather than forcing you to adapt to the horn.
The optimized keywork provides a light, confident feel that holds up through fast, technically demanding passages. The keys are specifically tapered and positioned to keep your hands relaxed — a real difference-maker when you're building up repertoire and technique simultaneously. Auxiliary keys include both Front F and High F#, giving you the full upper range that serious playing demands.
Built from Yellow Brass, Top to Bottom
The neck, body, bell, and keys are all made from yellow brass — a consistent material choice that contributes to the YSS-475II's resonant, focused tone. The bell features laser engraving for a clean, precision look. The tone holes are drawn rather than soldered on, which is standard on quality horns at this level and contributes to long-term durability.
The instrument is voiced and balanced to reward good technique — players who work on embouchure and air support will find the horn responds well. It includes a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece to get you started on a solid, neutral-playing setup.
