A Top That Punches Up
The spruce top — specifically Sitka Spruce — is the right choice for a guitar that needs to project clearly, especially amplified. Sitka is responsive across a wide dynamic range, from light fingerpicking to aggressive strumming, and it pairs well with the non-scalloped X-type bracing Yamaha uses here. That bracing was specifically designed to push more bass response out of the thinline body, so you're not sacrificing low-end warmth just because the body is slim.
The oval soundhole — a distinctive APX Series design detail — thickens the lower-mid response and gives the guitar a more open, strident low end than you might expect from a body this shallow. Players who've moved from a standard dreadnought often find the APX holds its own much better unplugged than they anticipated.
Electronics That Actually Work on Stage
The SYSTEM65 preamp and SRT undersaddle piezo pickup are the real heart of what makes the APX600 a performer's guitar. The SRT pickup uses individual elements per string, which delivers a cleaner, wider-bandwidth signal than a traditional single-element piezo — meaning less of that harsh, quacky piezo sound and more of your actual acoustic tone coming through the PA.
The onboard controls give you volume, a 3-band EQ, a mid-frequency sweep, and a built-in tuner. That tuner is genuinely useful at a gig — no clip-on rattling around, no reaching for a pedal, just a quick check before you start playing. The LINE OUT connection keeps your signal clean straight into the board.
Comfortable, Practical Dimensions
The 25" scale length is a touch shorter than many acoustics, which translates to slightly lower string tension and a friendlier feel for players coming from electric guitar backgrounds. The nut width is 43mm (1-11/16") with 10mm string spacing — on the narrower side for an acoustic, which makes chord shapes and single-note playing comfortable for a wide range of hand sizes. The rosewood fretboard has a generous 15.75" radius, closer to an electric guitar feel than most acoustics.
The body binding in ivory and black gives the guitar a clean, finished look, and the abalone soundhole rosette adds a touch of detail without being flashy. The die-cast chrome tuners (TM29T) are reliable and hold tune well for regular gigging use.
