Billy Strings' Signature Sound, Built for the Road
If you've been drawn to Billy Strings' blistering flatpicking and wondered how he makes those intricate runs look so easy, part of the secret is in his hands — but another part is in the setup. The Martin D-X2E Billy Strings brings that same player-first DNA to Martin's Mexico-made X Series, with the custom 25-inch scale length and 1 23/32-inch nut width Billy specs'd for his higher-end signature D-28. The shorter scale means less string tension, so bends feel easier, runs feel faster, and the whole neck just invites you to dig in. Pair that with a solid spruce top and Brazilian rosewood-patterned HPL back and sides, and you've got a dreadnought that punches above its weight — tonally and literally.
This isn't just another artist name slapped on a standard model. Martin and Billy designed this guitar to give up-and-coming players access to the same playability upgrades that make his $4,000 D-28 so nimble, without requiring a small loan. It's built to travel, built to take a beating, and built to sound good doing it. Whether you're working through bluegrass standards in your bedroom or stepping up to an open mic, the D-X2E Billy Strings keeps up.
The guitar ships gig-ready with Martin's E1 electronics and a built-in tuner, plus a custom hemp softshell case with Billy's logo embroidered on it. Each guitar includes a custom paper label inside with Billy's signature and graphic. It's a tool for players who care more about what comes out of the soundhole than what's written on the price tag.
A Neck That Moves With You
The 25-inch scale length is the star of the show here. Most Martin dreadnoughts use a 25.4-inch scale, and while that quarter-inch might not sound like much on paper, you'll feel it immediately. The reduced string tension makes the D-X2E Billy Strings easier to play for extended sessions, and bends that might feel stiff on a standard dreadnought suddenly have some give. If you've ever felt like a dreadnought fought back when you tried to play fast, this one won't.
The custom nut width of 1 23/32 inches sits right between Martin's vintage 1 3/4-inch spec and their modern 1 11/16-inch standard. It's slightly narrower than what you'd find on a vintage D-28, which makes the string spacing a little tighter and helps with fast position shifts up and down the neck. The Modified Low Oval neck profile keeps things comfortable without feeling chunky, and the satin finish means your hand glides without sticking.
The ebony fingerboard is a nice touch at this price point — it's more durable than rosewood and gives a snappier attack. Faux abalone diamond-and-square inlays nod to Martin's Style 28 aesthetic, and the fretboard has a 16-inch radius with 20 medium frets. The select hardwood neck uses a mortise-and-tenon joint, and while it's not the genuine mahogany you'd find on higher-end Martins, it's stable and road-ready.
HPL That Works Harder Than You'd Think
The D-X2E Billy Strings is built around a solid spruce top with scalloped X-bracing — the same internal architecture that gives Martin dreadnoughts their signature boom. Spruce is responsive, articulate, and projects well, whether you're strumming or fingerpicking. The hand-applied satin finish lets the top breathe and resonate naturally, and it looks clean without the high-maintenance gloss.
The back and sides are Brazilian rosewood-patterned high-pressure laminate, or HPL. It's not solid wood, but it's purpose-built for durability. HPL handles temperature and humidity swings better than rosewood, so you're not babying this guitar on the road or worrying about it cracking in a cold car. Tonally, HPL pushes more midrange and treble than solid rosewood, which means the D-X2E has a bright, punchy character that cuts through a mix. It won't have the low-end depth of a Nazareth-made D-28, but it's got plenty of volume and clarity for bluegrass, folk, singer-songwriter work, or anything else you throw at it.
The ebony bridge features a white Tusq saddle with a 16-inch radius and 2 5/16-inch string spacing. White plastic bridge pins keep things simple, and the faux tortoise pickguard protects the top from flatpicking wear. The Style 28 Boltaron rosette adds a classic visual touch, and nickel open-gear tuners with butterbean knobs are both functional and vintage-cool.
Stage-Ready Electronics
The Martin E1 preamp system is tucked under the soundhole, with easy-access controls for volume, tone, and phase, plus a built-in chromatic tuner. It's not going to revolutionize your plugged-in tone, but it does a solid job of capturing the guitar's natural acoustic voice without coloring it too much. For a sub-$1,000 guitar, the E1 system is more than capable for live gigs, recording, or rehearsal.
The phase control helps combat feedback when you're playing loud or close to a monitor, and the tuner is handy for quick tweaks between songs. The electronics are reliable, straightforward, and built for players who need to plug in and go without fussing with a pedalboard full of preamps and DIs.
