A Limited-Edition Grand Concert That Earns Its Looks
Some guitars catch your eye before they make a sound. The Taylor Academy 12e LTD is one of them. That layered AA-grade figured Hawaiian koa back and sides brings the kind of grain patterns you'd normally expect on a guitar costing considerably more — warm amber hues, flowing figure, the whole deal. But this isn't just a pretty face. Taylor put real thought into making the 12e LTD a genuinely comfortable, easy-playing instrument, not just a showpiece.
The Grand Concert body is Taylor's most compact full-scale shape, and it's a natural fit for players who spend long sessions at the guitar. There's an armrest carved right into the lower bout — a detail Taylor usually reserves for higher-end models — that takes the bite out of extended playing time. Add a slender Taylor neck profile, a 24-7/8" scale length, and a 1-11/16" nut width, and you have a guitar that invites you to keep playing rather than making you work for it.
And because it's a limited edition, once they're gone, they're gone. Taylor's staff has confirmed the 12e LTD is no longer in production.
A Torrefied Spruce Top with Played-In Character from Day One
The solid torrefied spruce top is one of the 12e LTD's most meaningful specs. Torrefaction — Taylor's specialized heat-roasting process — dramatically accelerates the natural aging of the soundboard. The result is a top that delivers the kind of warmth, balance, and tonal depth that traditional spruce tops develop only after years of regular play, right out of the box.
In practical terms, you get crisp articulation and clear note definition alongside a softness and warmth that new spruce tops sometimes take a long time to find. Whether you're fingerpicking through chord voicings or strumming open chords, the torrefied top responds beautifully to a lighter touch — which is exactly what the Grand Concert body shape was designed for.
Layered Hawaiian Koa Back and Sides
The back and sides are layered AA-grade figured Hawaiian koa — not solid koa, but that's not a knock. Layered construction makes for a more dimensionally stable instrument that's less sensitive to humidity swings, which matters if you're taking this guitar in and out of different environments. And the visual payoff is real: figured Hawaiian koa brings a richness and depth to the grain that photographs can barely do justice.
Tonally, koa tends to bring a vibrant midrange character with a pleasant sparkle in the top end — a nice complement to the warmth the torrefied spruce top provides. The Grand Concert shape keeps the overall voice balanced and articulate rather than boomy, making this a guitar that works well for both strumming and fingerstyle.
Taylor ES-B Electronics and Player-First Details
The Academy 12e LTD comes loaded with Taylor's ES-B pickup and preamp system. It's a behind-the-saddle transducer design with adjustable sensors, straightforward volume and tone controls, and a built-in chromatic tuner with LED display — including a low-battery indicator. The system runs on a standard 9V battery and is about as user-friendly as onboard electronics get.
Rounding out the appointments: a Nubone nut, Micarta saddle, die-cast chrome tuners, and a matte finish that lets the koa's natural character come through without the visual noise of heavy gloss. The Academy series herringbone rosette and dot inlays keep the look clean and focused on the wood itself.
