The Classic SG Special Returns
Some guitars just get it right. The Gibson SG Special was introduced in the early 1960s as a stripped-down variation of the SG Standard, and it quickly became associated with some of rock's most memorable riffs and performances. This Vintage Cherry model stays true to that early '60s formula with a slim mahogany body, dual P-90 pickups, and that unmistakable double-cutaway SG profile that's been rattling amplifiers for over six decades.
Right out of the case, the SG Special feels like a well-worn classic, with its rosewood fingerboard and SlimTaper neck profile delivering effortless playability. The all-mahogany construction gives you that warm, resonant tone Gibson is known for, while the lightweight body and exceptional balance make this guitar comfortable for hours-long practice sessions or full sets on stage.
This SG Special is built for players who want classic rock tone without the extras — just a great-sounding guitar that's ready to work.
P-90 Pickups with Bite and Clarity
The SG Special comes equipped with a pair of P-90 pickups, renowned for their snarly mids and superb dynamic response — dial back your volume for chiming cleans or crank it up for overdriven textures that retain clarity and definition. These are Gibson's original single-coil design, and they sit in a sweet spot between traditional single-coils and humbuckers.
Hand-wired electronics with dedicated volume and tone controls for each pickup allow precise shaping, with Orange Drop capacitors in the tone circuit ensuring stable, precise performance. You get a 3-way toggle switch to select between the neck pickup, bridge pickup, or both together — three distinct voices that all have character. Whether you're chasing bluesy cleans, garage rock grit, or heavy riff tones, these P-90s respond to your playing dynamics and deliver plenty of output.
Built for Speed and Access
The mahogany neck features a SlimTaper profile with a 12-inch radius rosewood fingerboard, 22 medium jumbo frets, and a 24.75-inch scale length. The iconic double-cutaway design, with its signature pointed horns and deeply beveled edges, grants supreme access to the upper frets. That SlimTaper neck is comfortable for chord work and fast enough for lead playing, while the set neck joint delivers solid sustain and resonance.
The compensated wraparound bridge provides solid intonation, and Vintage Deluxe tuners with white buttons keep you in tune. The gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish in Vintage Cherry looks sharp and lets the wood breathe. Chrome hardware, black top-hat knobs with silver reflectors, and a black 5-ply pickguard complete the classic aesthetic.
